Pilot’s flying farewell
concert review by M.R.
Pilot, Birmingham Town Hall
BIRMINGHAM was the last stop on Pilot’s provincial tour and they got a frantic farewell from the screaming teenies.
But unless you happen to be 14 and female, Pilot are not particularly exciting to see live.
Their reputation was made in the studio, where they thrashed out their own distinguishable sound and managed to live down early suggestions that they were mere copies of the Beatles.
With such hits as “January” and “Call Me Round” they achieved a pleasant, medium sweet blend of Scottish pop.
These chartbusters were naturally the highlights of the evening, although the early part of their programme was undistinguished and their latest single, “Do Me Good” seems to my ears to be a bit of a throwback to the Beatles again.
A word for the support group, Smokey, whose single, “Pass It Around" deserves more airing on radio.
The whole concert was far too loud, of course, but that goes without saying these days, doesn’t it?

Pilot,

Pilot’s magic performance
Up and coming pop group Pilot entertained a half-empty Central Hall on Saturday with some of their latest hits.
As well as their popular singles, Magic, January and Call Me Round, the group played some of the tracks from their latest LP, Second Flight.
Supporting group Smokey, who used to call themselves the Elizabethans, sang their latest single, the title track from their first album, Pass It Around.
