Smokey — “Don’t Play Your Rock and Roll To Me” (Rak)
single review
Just to prove that they're no ‘one hit wonders’, Smokey, a promising new band under the able management of Chapman and Chinn, have come up with a fairly pedestrian follow-up to “If You Think You Know How To Love Me”, their first successful single. “Don’t Play Your Rock and Roll To Me” (why does every new record always have the words rock and roll tucked away in the title and/or lyrics somewhere?) relies very heavily on a chord sequence borrowed from an early Presley song for most of its guitar work. The stolen riff is accompanied by some fuzzy strings and agonised vocals from Smokey’s harsh throated lead singer, a guy with a very interesting and pleasantly gruff voice. Chapman and Chinn have their astute little fingers firmly on the pulse of this nation's record buying public. They obviously believe (and Smokey's success with their initial single proved) that there is a market for this type of band doing this type of song. Still, I don't know whether the people who bought “If You Think You Know How To Love Me” will find Smokey’s latest quite as impressive. I'll earmark this a more than likely hit and hope that after getting them off to a good start, Smokey’s writers/ managers/ producers won't let them slide into the same wearisome trough they allowed Mud to fall into.
Smokey — “Don’t Play Your Rock and Roll To Me” (Rak)
Просто чтобы доказать, что они не «группа одного хита», Smokey, перспективная новая группа под умелым руководством Чапмена и Чинна, выпустила довольно заурядную пластинку после “If You Think You Know How To Love Me”, их первого успешного сингла. В “Don’t Play Your Rock and Roll To Me” (почему в названии и/или тексте каждой новой пластинки всегда где-то скрывается «рок-н-ролл»?) Тем не менее, я не уверен, что люди, купившие “If You Think You Know How To Love Me”, посчитают последнюю работу Smokey столь же впечатляющей.
