Yorkshire lads set to follow Mud

SUCCESS is never guaranteed in the pop business. But four lads from Yorkshire must feel they really have it made at last.
They have been adopted by Chinn and Chapman, those master chart writers who never put a pen wrong guiding Mud and Sweet to a string of top hits. And more than that, they have been signed to the hit-picking RAK label as replacements for Mud and Sweet.
So the signs, the songs and the promotion look good for Smokey. It just remains to be seen whether you rush out and buy their first single, "Pass It Around" and the debut album of the same name.
Smokey are Alan Silson, Terry Uttley, Peter Spencer and Chris Norman. They're all known to clubgoers in the Bradford and Leeds area, because, one way and another, they've played with [...]

He left school at 15 after a series of rows with teachers and his parents about his long hair and attitude to work. He drifted in and out of jobs before the band went pro.
Chris, who is married with two children, Brian (6) and Paul (2) said: "We've been together so long we know what we're going to do, whatever we've learned up to now we've learned together."
Terry, another Bradford boy, gave up printing for music. He's especially pleased that Chinn and Chapman like the band's own songs. "We write about the things that happen to us. Because we're away from home so often, lot of the numbers are sad songs about the people we know and miss."
Peter Spencer comes from Leeds and is the only relative newcomer in the band. He joined Smokey about 18 months ago after playing with groups in Britain and on the Continent and in styles ranging from rock gigs to Mediterranean cruises.
Behind all the heavy promotion just how good are Smokey? We thought you might like to find out before their record is topping the charts, so we have six Smokey albums, "Pass It Around" (RAK) to give away.
