No fire from Smokey
Pass It Around – Smokey (RAK)
album review by P.S.

Pass it around, Smokey are the four Bradford lads who appeared on the “Whistle Test” by courtesy of the Beeb at the weekend.

While the same broadcasting authority ruled it “not in family interests” to allow a certain brand name to appear through their cameras, at a sporting event at the weekend, Smokey’s ability to be rude had the opportunity to slip by unnoticed.

For on their first (and only) L.P. is a little ditty all about the after-effects of boozing. Brewer's droop is the main theme of “Headspin”, penned by drummer Pete Spencer and guitarist Chris Norman.

However, the lads seemed content to use the TV appearance as a plug for the album. Whispering Rolf (Bob) Harris grinned in approval of the song, but then doesn't he always?

“Pass It Around” is one of two Nicky Chinn / Mike Chapman compositions on the record, the other being “I Do Declare”. The remaining 11 tracks are all originals by members of the group.

PRECISION

Chinnichap are responsible for production and cut the disc with stop-watch precision. No track is allowed to run much over two and a half minutes, which adds to easy listening but gives the album a mood of futility.

Some of the lyrics are banal – the word “love” appears no fewer than 25 times in the song “Will You Love Me” – and rhymes such as time and mine, soon and moon, hound and ground, brain and drain, hell and tell, myself and shelf, do nothing to demonstrate literary intelligence.

All four members of the group contribute whole or part of a song, lead guitarist Alan Silson appearing to have most of the ideas. The best thing to do with the record in my opinion is to pass it around.

Smokey без огня
Pass It Around – Smokey (RAK)

“Pass It Around” – одна из двух композиций Ники Чинна/Майка Чапмена на пластинке, вторая – “I Do Declare”.

Некоторые тексты банальны – слово «любовь» появляется не менее 25 раз в песне “Will You Love Me” – и такие рифмы, как time и mine, soon и moon, hound и ground, brain и drain, hell и tell, myself и shelf, никак не говорят о литературном даре.
