All Smokey but no fire
by Simon Orrell
Bradford band Smokey are not going to be put off by the failure of their first single, "Pass It Around", to hit the charts.
Despite a tremendous publicity campaign, the record just hasn't got off the ground.
But like the true professionals they are - and Smokey have been together for seven years now under different names - they intend to bounce back in style.
"We will give the single another few weeks and if it does not do well, we will release another within a month," said lead guitarist Alan Silson.
The new single will be once again written by the very successful writers, Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman, who have written several hit singles for among others, Sweet, Suzi Quatro and Mud.
"What we really want to do is a Top of the Pops," added Alan. The band are in Bradford at present rehearsing for a forthcoming tour with top group Pilot.
"We will not be playing Bradford but the tour includes Leeds on May 2. We're also doing several television shows."
Last night Smokey played the on television for the first time on "The Old Grey Whistle Test". They are booked to do "45" and "Saturday Scene" on Thames TV.
Their tour with chart toppers Pilot starts on April 27. The band's album, which will undoubtedly be boosted by the British tour, has been released on the Continent and negotiations are going on with a recording company in America.
"We intended to release America a compilation of this LP and a new one we will be releasing in England during September," said Alan.
Should Smokey really hit the big time, they will have waited patiently for their success. Three of the members met at St. Bedes Grammar School seven years ago and formed a group called The Elizabethans.
Since then the only change in line-up occurred two years ago when drummer Pete Spencer replaced Ron Kelly.

Smokey без огня
автор Simon Orrell
Вчера вечером Smokey впервые выступили на телевидении в "The Old Grey Whistle Test".
The Elizabethans.
